Finding Certainty in an Uncertain World (1)
The Certainty of God’s Word
The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; In keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous sins; Let them not rule over me; Then I will be blameless, And I shall be acquitted of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
Who do we believe today? The uncertainty we face in the present is compounded by the lack of clarity and certainty of the information we receive. Politicians twist the events to fit their narrative and agenda. We watch the news but comparing the information from one channel to another makes us wonder if they are even reporting on the same events for, they interpret the events to raise their ratings and fit their own views. Even the information we receive from the medical experts seems conflicting and confusing. On Facebook one person quotes one “expert” who says one thing, while another quotes a different “expert” who says just the opposite. In the end we remain confused and perplexed and uncertain who to believe.
But there is one source of information that is certain, absolute and unerring, and that is the scriptures. In Psalm 19 the psalms points to two great voices who give us insight into the glory, nature and workings of God. The first is the voice of creation itself, which, with its grander and beauty, proclaim the glory and power of God. But an even greater voice is the word of God. To capture the wonder of God’s word the psalmist heaps adjective upon adjective to completely encompass the scope of His word (law, testimony precepts commandments, Fear, Judgment), the nature of His word ( Perfect, sure, right, pure clean, enduring, true, righteous) as well as the effect of his word (restoring the soul, making wise the simple, rejoicing the heart, enlightening the eyes.). Because of this, then the pursuing of the knowledge of his word is more desirable than anything we might desire, for God’s word not only restores us in times of discouragement, but it purifies and cleanses us as well. This is why the reading of his word becomes so critical in times of uncertainty for His word is certain and true and all his promises are guaranteed. As we become apprehensive about the uncertainty of our day, we need to turn to scripture and spend time in the Bible for there is where we find the answers of life that are always true and certain. Today, instead of spending hours watching the latest news or reading the internet for the latest information, spend time reading the Bible for this will give far more perspective than anything else we might listen to.
